Chapter Eleven

The restaurant was very nice, and Erin understood why it was so busy, even on a Wednesday evening. The table was illuminated by candlelight, and the tablecloth was a bright white with a satiny finish. Scents of garlic and other mouthwatering Italian spices filled the air, mingling with the aroma of the fresh bread on the table. They had a table in the back, where it was a bit quieter, and Erin thought it must help to know the owner.

“Pretty nice place, don’t you think?” Luke asked, smiling at her from across the table, his blue eyes twinkling in the candlelight.

“It really is. We don’t have anything like this in Charles Town. You have to drive a little way to find a place this nice.”

He smiled at her and offered her the bread basket. She took a breadstick, which already looked to be slathered in garlic and butter, and tore off a chunk, setting the rest on her bread plate. It somehow tasted even better than it smelled.

“You look lovely,” Luke said, setting his own breadstick aside and wiping his hands on the napkin in his lap.

He’d already made a similar comment when he’d come to the door to pick her up, but Maw had made such a fuss about how handsome he was that she hadn’t had a chance to respond. Since Erin had only brought two dresses with her, it hadn’t been too difficult to choose this pink one; she liked it quite a bit. The lacey edges made her feel particularly feminine, and she liked how well her pink cardigan went with it. The dress itself was sleeveless, and Erin usually didn’t feel comfortable without something covering her up more so than the dress would’ve done on its own. She’d borrowed a pair of pearl earrings from her grandmother and wore the pendant her mother had given her last time they were in Ireland, a small gold shamrock.

“Thank you,” Erin said in response to his comment. “You look very nice as well.” He was dressed in a button down blue shirt which almost matched his eyes, and dark slacks. She could tell he’d taken the time to restyle his hair, too, as the peak to the swoosh in the front, as she liked to think of it, had every hair in place.

“What, this old thing?” Luke joked, gesturing at his shirt. “I just roll out of bed looking like this.”

She couldn’t help but giggle. He’d been trying to make her laugh the entire ride here, and had been fairly successful, even though some of his jokes were a little ridiculous. Still, he could clearly see she was nervous and he was doing his best to calm her down. “Did you have any trouble following Maw’s directions.”

“No, once I reached the bones of the dead bird and turned left, I was golden.”

Laughing again, Erin said, “I don’t think they were quite that cryptic. They might have been if Granda had given them to me though. His directions usually start with, ‘Look for the big tree.
